Market Research Analysis

In question 1 I found out that 70% of the people I asked would buy a Hip Hop magazine which means that it is a popular genre. This however cannot be representative of the whole population as my sample consists of people aged 14-29.

90% of the people like the color scheme of White, Black and Gold meaning it's appealing to the customers. I'm most likely to use this color scheme now that it attracts a wider range of customers.

3rd question was "Do you like the idea of a upcoming artists talking about a album they recently released as a DPS" I found out that 80% of people liked it and therefore I will still stick to it, as it can be very interesting topic.

The sample group had the biggest variety of answers on the 4th question which was "which name do you like the most?" as there isn't one significant name which was liked the most. The most popular was "hype" with 30% of votes followed by "dope" with 20% which means that I need to decide on one of the two or come up with a new one.

Finally the price of my magazine should be between £1.00-1.99 as with this price more customers are more likely to buy the magazine.

First Draft of The Article

London Beast

In most recent years of Hip Hop, the underground artists have definitely grained more recognition. This is the cause of the Beast Coast Movement influencing more and more teenagers to following their dreams of becoming famous rappers. The Beast Coast Movement is a sub-genre of hip hop which was formed by a group of teenaged rappers from New York City. The movement is constantly growing in recognition which first started as a small local trend is now recognised around the world. The reason behind this is the fact that their all lyrical geniuses’, they don’t stick to the norm rapping about money, girls and drugs but true events hoping people realize how cruel the world really is. Their fame is constantly growing. A$AP Rocky is the first artist from the genre to become mainstream, he popularised the genre and allowed it to become mainstream, this allowed other rappers from the genre to climb through and achieve the fame they deserve and although they aren’t as famous as certain pop start celebrities such as Justin Bieber, but they are staring to work with mainstream hip hop artist’s such as Mac Miller which would allow them to climb the ladder of success.
The influence of Beast Coast Artists can now be seen starting to develop in London. The artist Chief STEEZ is the “Leader” of the underground Hip hop movement in London. He recently released an album called “8th Chakra” which grained him a lot of recognition in the hip hop industry. It received good reviews from critics and it’s been voted as one of the best hip hop albums of 2013. People call Chief STEEZ the Joey Bada$$ of London. We’ve been privileged to meet and interview Chief STEEZ to see what he thinks about this.
Where does the name Chief STEEZ mean? “I’ve given myself that name because it reflects on the type of person I am. I view myself as a leader of something new, something that has never been done in UK before, Hip Hop has always been associated with America, I want to change this I want to show the world that UK can do Hip Hop, as a leader of this movement I’m the chief of my group whereas steez means style with ease. I think that my style is unique and it comes to me naturally which is why I combined the two to call myself Chief STEEZ”
Where does your inspiration come from? “I’ve always been a fan of hip hop, my favourite old school artist include Notorious B.I.G, Tupac, Wu Tang Clan, Run DMC and Nas. They are the ones who got me into hip hop however Kendrick Lamar, School Boy Q and Joey Bada$$ have inspired me to becoming an artist myself. I liked the way in which Beast Coast was a family and it was a real shame that they didn’t have this here in London so I decided to start my own crew which now a growing community of rappers like me who share a dream in becoming known for their music.”
Are you coping Beast Coast? “No, and I hate it when people ask me this, I think that the type of music we create is different, the only similarity being we’re a family of rappers but this wasn’t established by the people from Beast Coast. There are many examples of groups of hip hop artists for example Wu Tang Clan, Odd Future and others.”
What is your album “8th Chakra” about? “This album talks about the struggles of growing up in a bad neighbourhood, this is because we aren’t views as poor but in reality we can’t afford many of the things apart from the stuff that are necessary. It also talks about how we’re mostly ‘followers’ we do what we’re told most of the time and hardly get any choice. We go to an average school get an average degree to go an average job that’s enough for us to live but not really enough to have any changes made in our life all because we are afraid to step our comfort zone and live the fun life. My album talks about how we can free our self from this type of living and enter the 4th dimension where the 8th Chakra would be. This would allow us to view living our life’s differently. It would let us open up and do what we really want to do rather than just following someone’s rules.

DPS analysis 2

This is another example of a double page spread from the same magazine in this issue we see a very similar lay out which could be the case for all of the double spread articles from this magazine.

The image shows a close up of Soulja Boy who has alot of "body art" drawn on him. He is also looking away from the camera, creating a profile like image the focus of the image is the word "swag" written on Soulja Boy's face suggesting that he has swag.

The article is split into two columns which is easy to read and it also looks nice. There is a quote on the top of the page saying "life of a shooting star" which is written in a different font. This quote is also the title of the article which is a smart way of combining the two.

The color scheme for this double page spread is black white and red, this works well with the image which is in a similar color way. The more important words are highlighted in red adding some color to the double page spread to make it look less formal and more like a magazine article.

DPS analysis 1

I've choose this double page spread article because of it's simplicity, it's divided the image and the text on to separate pages.

The image is a close up of Wiz Khalifa face with smoke coming out his mouth suggesting he just smoked what presumably is marijuana since this is what he often associates himself with. He's looking directly into the camera. The image is on a black background and the color scheme is black and yellow, possibly relating to Wiz Khalifa's song "Black and Yellow"

It appears as if the article starts with some sort of logo which is unique. The title isn't big nor bold but it's still significantly larger than the rest of the text, also "how high" links to the image.

There is no quote which subverts the convention of a double page spread, however the text is split into two even columns on one page, there isn't any word that are being highlighted. The article still appears to be easy to read. It's on a white background which contrasts the image but this was done so that the article can be easily readable.

Hip Hop Content Page Analysis 3

This contents page differs greatly from the first that we looked at. Its pure, white, seemingly. Unlike the previous contents page this one uses less text and  more imagery to make the stories clear as to what they are about as well as promote the story more by making it look more interesting. The page is split into two columns where as the others we looked at only had one, this is a better way of managing space on the page. There is no adverts nor competitions which subverts the convention of a typical magazine.

Hip Hop Content Page Analysis 2

This content page is similar to the previous one in the way it's formatted which is 1 column and 1 main image.
I know that this is a Hip Hop magazine because the artists that are featured on this content page are associated and work in the hop hop genre. The image shows an artist holding a bag and wearing a leather jacket coated with fur, this fashion style is somewhat related to what other artist would wear as it's eye catching and stands out. The way in which the text is presented out is very neat and organised, with the color scheme being only 2 toned (excluding the image) it looks very simple. The one column with "Featured" articles suggests that this content page could be spread out between two pages. This content page subverts many if the hip hop conventions as it also has no adverts nor competitions.

Hip Hop Content Page Analysis

I found this content page online, I choose to do it because it subverts the convention of a typical content page as it only has 1 image whereas most would have more smaller images relating to other articles.

The image of Kendrick Lamar is the focal point of this content page because it covers more than half of this page, this is a full body shot of Kendrick with his legs cropped out.

The color scheme of black, white and red is used, it's very common in magazines because it works well, it's clear and easily readable with the font in red standing out more suggesting it's the most important article in the magazine.

There's only 1 column, with a very minimal amount of text on it, it still has a page number, a title of the article and there's limited detail about any of the articles. Which makes the content page look more simple but it still looks nice and professional

Mood board

Music Magazine plan

Genre - I have decided to make music magazine that will focus on Hip Hop. I chose this because I'm the most familiar with this genre and I listen to alot of music from this genre. More specifically my magazine will cover the Beast Coast Movement, which is a sub genre of hip hop that falls under the "underground hip hop" section. I will also relate to some of my favorite artists that are more reco gnized.

Target Audience - My target audience will be teens who listen to this type of music and because Beast Coast Movement is strictly a east coast movement it will be the most popular in the NYC, however it is becoming more popular in other parts of America as well as London.

Name - I  have not decided on which name I will use but it will relate to the music I'm talking about, it must be short and catchy. Some of my ideas include "Underground" this is because the type of music I'm talking about is underground hip hop.  "Beats coast" it's a play on words with beast coast, beats relate to beast coast because most of the songs have catchy old school hip hop beats and finally "hipstory" this is because some of the beast coasts artists are viewed as "hipsters" as they don't want to follow the mainstream trends. The masthead will be in a big bold font that is a bright color most likely red

Focal Image -  The main image will portray a artist doing something controversial to grab the attention of the audience. The model will be holding some sort of a weapon and looking like a criminal to make them appear as bad and anti social. I'd also want them to be wearing a panda balaclava  like in the video "survival tactics" by Joey Bada$$ and Capital STEEZ. I'd also want my model to be dressed in the style like the one in the video.

Photography - It will be a extreme low shot of the model, to give the model a sense of authority and power, and although they are fairy new to the genre they will be looked up to, it will be a full body shot to show what the model is wearing.

Mise en scene- It will be located in a dark alleyway, preferably a tight one with not much space around the model. The model will be wearing a panda balaclava, and some american clothing, this might include an army camo jacket or a black baseball jacket, some black trousers and typically american basketball trainers such as Jordan's.

Sell lines -  My sell lines would include articles based on Hip Hop, as well as occurrences associated with hip hop these would include  gigs, tours, album reviews , events, upcoming dates, these sell lines will appeal to the target audience because they would be likely to look at them and want to see what is going because if they are willing to buy a magazine they will clearly be willing to buy other products associated with this genre.

Featured articles - these would include a interview with an artist, album reviews as well as information about the upcoming tours and albums. Also it will talk about any events that the artists have been involved in. This would include being featured in a song or a tv program.

Focus of the double page spread -  An article about the beast coast movement, this includes most of the upcoming artists, and how it's different to the mainstream hip hop, there is many things to talk about, for example how beast coast started? what influenced it? etc.

Photography for double page spread - Much like most of the Beast Coast rappers which are made from fairly big groups of people I want to take a long shot of a group of singers, low angle shot which shows the superiority and power of the singers. they will all be doing something else and only some of them will be looking at the camera, to show that they are rebellious even to the conventions of magazines

Magazine content page

For my content page I have used a similar theme as for my front cover, I used the same 3 colours which are burgundy white and black. I decided to use a black and white image on a burgundy background with white text because I think that this combination works well.

School Magazine front cover

I've created this using Photoshop CS6, firstly I've outlined the background with a white border and changed the color to burgundy, then I've taken the image and added a black and white filter. After I downloaded the "college" font onto my laptop and installed it into Photoshop, while I was putting it together I cropped out my image and it looked very rough so I added  a white border around my image, I thought that the burgundy and white scheme works very well so I decided to keep the sell lines in the same color, however I kept the masthead black because it fits the image which is black and white, when I tried the masthead in white the front cover looked too plain.

Front Cover and Content page sketch

These are the initial design ideas for my front cover as well as the content page.

The front cover will have a long shot of a model standing there with his hands in his pockets, this represents that he is relaxed despite the hard choices he will have to make as a student, this is because this magaazine will help him with these choices.

A simillar idea is potrayed in the content page where the model is leaning back agains a wall.

Although these sketches aren't great they are a basic representation of what my magazine will look like, I still need to consider the colours and other conventions.

Font analysis

http://www.dafont.com/colleged.font?text=College

The first font is called "colleged" by imagex. I like it because it's old school and it relates to my magazine, it's simple but looks damaged or as if it's wearing off, this very unique and I think it looks very nice. I think this font will suit a masthead

http://www.dafont.com/sports-jersey.font?psize=s&text=Lifestyle

The second font is called "Sport Jersey" by Arfurware. I like it because it's simple and looks very professional, my aim is to create a magazine that looks professional. I think that this font is modern and it will suit a front cover. The contrast between the simple and complex fonts creates a nice composition that is very eye catching

Music Magazine Content Page Analysis

Content page analysis

I've decided to analyse this content page because I like the layout of it and I'd like to do something like this in my magazine.

This content page does not look like a normal content page because it does not have the convetntions of a typical magazine. In most magazine there will be lot's of pictures showing something related to the part of content page. While this one only shows 1 picture of a model relating to the feautred article.

The image of 50 cent is the focal point of this content page because it covers more than half of this page, this is a full body shot of 50 cent with his legs croped out, 50 cent is also looking at the audience which I think will appeal to the readers, this can be a unique selling point of this article.

This content page still covers some of the convetions, such as title of a article with a page number and small description of the article to tell the readers what it's about, this content page only has 1 collumn which is uniqe because most of the content pages we looked at had 3 collumns with the middle collumn being bigger than the 2 on the side , however I think that when there is less information on the content page it looks more professional.

The colour scheme is kept to 3 main colours which are red, black and white. I think that this combination work well and is appealing to the readers, most of the content pages we looked at had at least some red, this is because red stands out and attracts the readers which will make them read the article.

School magazine analysis

Class is a school magazine, I know this because all the content is school related and the front cover has a student which connotes that this a magazine.
The masthead is writen in a font style that is used by american high schools and colleges. Also the word 'class' relates to schools because schools have diffrent classes.
The language used is formal but does not include any language that someone might strugle to understand.
There is a small amount of writing on the front cover and the background looks very plain which makes it look unfinished and unprofesional in my opinion, on the other hand the glowing of the letters makes them stand out and it looks nice
Not all of the conventions are used, and the mag just looks 'empty' however you can see the theme of american styled schools with the graduation outfit and the font used.

It dosen't have a barcode but it does have a button with the price.
The sort of people who might read this type of magazine are people who share an intrest in school events and students who want to find out more about what's happenig in their school

Student Magazine Plan

Preliminary Task - Student Magazine Plan

Our task is to create a school magazine that involve all of the conventions that can be found in one.

For my magazine I have decided to target it at older students, such as the 6th former's.
This means the age range will be 16-18 year old's who share a common interest in school events as well as extra curricular activity, some of the articles might include tips and guides about going to uni etc.

I have decided to call my magazine "Collage Lifestyle" because it's an accurate, short and catchy name that links well to the sort of articles you might find inside.

I think it would be best if I had 1 model experiencing something related to the main article in some way, alternatively it could just be them looking smart in their suit as this would be a good representation of how we act in 6th form.

If the weather is nice the shot can be taken outside, I think that the article will look more professional if it's a full body shot, but only showing the models torso and their head, that way we can also put some headlines around their body without covering the model.

Apart from the main article which would be about students future, I think some of the sell lines should include articles that also can help the students in some way. This would probably include articles such as "Top 20 Uni's" "Best paid jobs" "Work now play later - How to prepare for exams" If the students can relate to the articles then they are more likely to read them.

The articles from sell lines would be the featured articles in the contents page, I think there should also be an school advert.

Front cover analysis

Front Cover Analysis

Clash is a music magazine mainly focussing on Hip Hop, this is because the main image portrays a Hip Hop artist called A$AP Rocky who is known for his Hip Hop songs The Front cover also features sell lines with names of artists such as Mac Miller who are also known for to make Hip Hop music.

The masthead says "Clash" The connotation of this could be that it's has a range of articles "clashing" together in one magazine.

This article is aimed at teenagers and people who are into music because of the use of slang "behind the swag of ASAP Rocky"

The layout is very basic and dull, however it does look professional and it does match the main image because the bright yellow leopard printing contrast the dull blue background

It's a close up of ASAP Rocky wearing a Supreme towel in the style of Arabian men wearing their Turbans

The Article features small sell lines because they are not as important as the main image and the article.
